Crispy Smashed Tater Tots🥗 Side
Golden potato nuggets get flattened and roasted to perfection, then garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley. These irresistible bites won't even make it to the table!
By Priya Patel, Recipe Curator
There's something magical about transforming humble freezer staples into restaurant-worthy appetizers, and these smashed tater tots prove that a little creativity goes a long way. The double-baking method creates an incredible textural contrast—crispy, lacy edges give way to fluffy potato centers, while the Parmesan forms golden, savory pockets that practically beg to be dipped in your favorite sauce. They're perfect for game day spreads, casual dinner parties, or those evenings when you want something special without the fuss.
The key to achieving maximum crispiness lies in that initial bake before smashing. Those twenty minutes allow the tots to firm up just enough so they won't fall apart when pressed, yet they're still soft enough to flatten properly. When you're ready to smash, don't be shy with the cooking spray on your measuring cup—it prevents sticking and helps create those coveted crispy edges. If you find the tots resisting your press, they may need another minute or two in the oven first.
Feel free to get creative with your toppings beyond the classic Parmesan and parsley combination. A sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning, a drizzle of truffle oil, or even a dusting of taco seasoning can transform these bites entirely. Serve them with ranch dressing, garlic aioli, or spicy ketchup for dipping, and watch them disappear faster than you can say "just one more."
